Mr. Matthew Lau

Mr Matthew Lau is the founder of Flatworld. He is a much sought after speaker and has delivered talks and training since 1991. He is a certified trainer and received training from some of the world’s best trainers.

Matthew is the first Malaysian to win first place at the Junior Chamber International Asia Pacific Speech Contest and the only Malaysian to win 2nd place at the Junior Chamber International World Speech Contest held in Helsinki, Finland in 1991. He was the youngest Malaysian to achieve the Competent Toastmaster Award. He has also participated in the Perak Himalaya Expedition and participated in the 6th World Karate Championship in Taiwan.

He has conducted training for numerous organizations in leadership, communications, creative problem-solving, supervisory skills, counseling, sales and marketing and graphology.

Among his clients are: Qantas Airways, Sungei Way Group, Kumpuan Belton Bhd, Ngam Yin Groundnuts, Rotary International, M1 Publishing (S) Pte Ltd, FMM, Malaysian Nurses Association, Amway Berhad, Raffles Educational Services (S) Pte Ltd, Rihga Royal Hotel, TEC Group, Institut Jantung Negara, Malaysian Institute of Accountants, Beaubelle Sdn Bhd, Fatimah Hospital, Malaysian Army, APM Sdn Bhd and Hong Leong Finance.

The Passion Behind Flat World

Matthew came from a large family of 14 brothers and sisters and experienced many wonderful life changing experiences. His father worked hard to sustain the family and his mum toiled night and day to care for the children and also help to make some additional source of income by doing some extra part time work.

He started real work at age 15, working as a newspaper delivery boy in the morning and most times working as a laborer thus skipping school often and earning labels such as ‘Good For Nothing’, ‘Useless’, ‘No Future’, ‘Hopeless’ and many more from teachers whom are too busy to judge and have no time to care.

He did experience meeting some great teachers though and they did make a difference. He strived very hard from young and often rising from adversities. He often say to his buddies ‘It is okay that I fail trying and not fail because I allowed it’. He has always been seeking ways to realize his potential, find out the answer how the poor can get out from the cycle of poverty and a place where people can see him for whom he is and not what he is.

He has joined many organizations and been there and done that but his search for such a place was futile until three years ago when an inspiration struck him when he was driving and the inspiration says ‘Matthew, why bother to look for it and why not you build one’. He got excited and upon reaching home, took out his pen and started writing down the principles and values that he believe and it took him one year to design the entire programme.

Matthew often say that this is not a perfect platform but designed to continuously improve and grow. This platform is about giving and he promotes the servant leadership concept with enthusiasm and commitment by first being a servant leader himself..
